چکیده

We use the clustering of galaxies around distant active-galactic nuclei (AGN) to derive an estimate of the relationship between galaxy and black hole mass that obtained during the ancient quasar epoch, at redshifts 2 < ∼ z < ∼ 3, when giant black holes accreted much of their mass. Neither the mean relationship nor its scatter differs significantly from what is observed in the local universe, at least over the ranges of apparent magnitude (16 < ∼ GAB < ∼ 26) and black-hole mass (10 6 < ∼ MBH < ∼ 10 M⊙) that we are able to probe. Subject headings: galaxies: high-redshift — cosmology: large-scale structure of the universe — quasars: general

Accretion-driven evolution of black holes: Eddington ratios, duty cycles and active galaxy fractions

We develop semi-empirical models of the supermassive black hole and active galactic nucleus (AGN) populations, which incorporate the black hole growth implied by the observed AGN luminosity function assuming a radiative efficiency and a distribution of Eddington ratios λ. By generalizing these continuity-equation models to allow a distribution P(λ |MBH, z), we are able to draw on constraints fr...

The Clustering of Agn in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We present the two–point correlation function (2PCF) of narrow-line active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected within the First Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Using a sample of 13605 AGN in the redshift range 0.055 < z < 0.2, we find that the AGN auto–correlation function is consistent with the observed galaxy auto–correlation function on scales 0.2hMpc to > 100hMpc. The AGN hosts tra...

Radio Jets in Galaxies with Actively Accreting Black Holes: new insights from the SDSS

In the local Universe, the majority of radio-loud AGN are found in massive elliptical galaxies with old stellar populations and weak or undetected emission lines. At high redshifts, however, almost all known radio AGN have strong emission lines. This paper focuses on a subset of radio AGN with emission lines (EL-RAGN) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We explore the hypothesis that th...

Supermassive Black Hole Mass Functions at Intermediate Redshifts from Spheroid and AGN Luminosity Functions

Redshift evolution of supermassive black hole mass functions (BHMFs) is investigated up to z ∼ 1. BHMFs at intermediate redshifts are calculated in two ways. One way is from early-type galaxy luminosity functions (LFs); we assume an MBH − Lsph correlation at a redshift by considering a passive evolution of Lsph in the local relationship. The resultant BHMFs (spheroid-BHMFs) from LFs of red sequ...

The Black Hole - Bulge Relationship for QSOs at High Redshift

We examine the black hole mass galaxy bulge relationship in high-redshift QSOs. Black hole masses are derived from the broad emission lines, and the host galaxy stellar velocity dispersion σ∗ is estimated from the widths of the radio CO emission lines. At redshifts z > 3, the CO line widths are narrower than expected for the black hole mass, indicating that these giant black holes reside in und...
